In 2024, MicroStrategy invested a whopping $22.07 billion to acquire 258,320 BTC at an average price of $85,450 per Bitcoin. This bold strategy paid off handsomely, yielding a remarkable 74.3% return last year.
Starting the year with 189,150 Bitcoins, the company boosted its holdings by 140,630 BTC, averaging 385 BTC per day. According to Michael Saylor, if Bitcoin’s price reaches $100,000, MicroStrategy could generate $14.06 billion in shareholder value annually, translating to about $38.5 million daily.
Insights on Institutional Bitcoin Purchases
Ryan Rasmussen, Head of Research at Bitwise, highlighted a significant surge in institutional Bitcoin accumulations last year. The figures rose from 262,635 BTC in Q4 2023 to 321,224 BTC in Q2 2024.
Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, underscored the profound impact of these institutional purchases, identifying them as a key driver of demand growth by 2025. He suggested that establishing a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve could potentially push Bitcoin’s price up to $500,000.
Towards the end of the year, MicroStrategy ramped up its Bitcoin acquisitions, planning to purchase an additional $2 billion worth of BTC. Continuing this trend, the company recently acquired 1,070 BTC for $101 million.
