IMF Estimates $400M in Gains from Bitcoin Strategy
According to a report published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in March, El Salvador’s Bitcoin purchases since 2021 are estimated at approximately $300 million, with current unrealized gains surpassing $400 million at prevailing market prices.
The IMF cautioned, however, that full transparency on the country’s Bitcoin portfolio remains limited, making independent assessments challenging. Despite these concerns, the fund acknowledged that El Salvador remains among the largest sovereign holders of Bitcoin.
Leading Among Sovereign Bitcoin Reserves
El Salvador’s Bitcoin reserves continue to outpace several other nations experimenting with alternative crypto strategies, including those focusing on mining-backed reserves. By diversifying its wallet structure and implementing public oversight tools, the government aims to bolster both security and accountability in its Bitcoin strategy.
The ONBTC emphasized that the restructuring aligns with long-term plans to protect El Salvador’s Bitcoin assets from emerging technological risks while reinforcing public trust in its pioneering adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender.

While debates continue over the financial prudence of the strategy, El Salvador remains firmly positioned as a global leader in state-level Bitcoin adoption. Analysts say the latest security measures highlight the government’s intent to balance innovation with risk management in an evolving crypto landscape.
