A growing effort within the XRP community is focusing on building what some describe as an “XRP firewall” — a comprehensive defense system designed to block scams and fraudulent activity on the XRP Ledger (XRPL).
XLS-86 Firewall in Development
Vet, one of the dUNL validators on the XRPL, recently revealed that a major update, known as the XLS-86 Firewall, is in active development. The feature is being described as a potential game-changer in the fight against fraud, offering safeguards against losses of XRP, tokens, and NFTs.
If approved and implemented, the XLS-86 Firewall could provide everyday users with a much stronger security layer, protecting them from scams that have cost the XRP community millions of dollars in recent years.
The urgency around stronger protections increased after developers discovered malicious packages in the xrpl.js library on NPM, prompting a swift patch on April 23, 2025.

Existing Tools and Reporting Systems
While XRPL already has partial protections in place, they are scattered across different platforms. XRPL.org currently allows users to file scam reports and seek guidance on suspicious activity. Meanwhile, forensics platforms such as XRplorer maintain databases of addresses linked to fraud and illicit transfers, which are used by some wallets and exchanges to warn or block interactions.
However, these tools are not yet unified into a single shield, leaving gaps in user protection. The proposed firewall aims to close those gaps by consolidating defenses into one system.
How a Firewall Could Work
- Auto-flagging fraudulent addresses: Wallets could warn users before they approve payments to flagged accounts.
- Shared databases: Exchanges and node operators could share blacklists to prevent scammers from moving funds freely.
- Machine learning detection: Algorithms could spot patterns in phishing attempts and cloned domains, while human teams review complex cases.
Market watchers suggest that such a system would act as both a deterrent and a proactive security measure, reshaping how scams are handled on XRPL.
