Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has publicly responded to growing debate over the network’s 45-day staking exit queue, describing staking as a long-term responsibility rather than a quick liquidity option.
The comments came after Michael Marcantonio, head of DeFi at Galaxy Digital, criticized the exit queue on X (formerly Twitter), calling it “troubling” and comparing Ethereum to Solana, where unstaking typically takes just two days. Marcantonio’s posts were later deleted after pushback from the Ethereum community.
Buterin Frames Staking as a Duty, Not a Shortcut
Buterin drew a stark comparison between unstaking ETH and a soldier leaving the army, emphasizing that staking is not simply an investment but a commitment to securing the network.
“Friction in quitting is part of the deal. An army cannot hold together if any percent of it can suddenly leave at any time,” Buterin said.
While acknowledging that the current queue design is not perfect, Buterin stressed that lowering exit constraints could make the chain “much less trustworthy” for nodes that are not consistently online.
Galaxy Digital Faces Backlash
Galaxy Digital, which recently purchased $1.5 billion in Solana after launching a treasury venture with Multicoin Capital and Jump Crypto, has been accused of deliberately spreading Ethereum FUD.
Former Consensys product manager Jimmy Ragosa said the controversy has caused entities with Ethereum exposure to reconsider their business with Galaxy. Ethereum educator Anthony Sassano added that deleting tweets does not erase Marcantonio’s “lack of understanding” of the ecosystem.
Crypto lawyer Gabriel Shapiro called the posts “gaslighty psyops,” while Solana advocate Mike Dudas defended Galaxy, arguing that it has proven its ability to create value through Solana partnerships.
Ethereum Ecosystem Remains Strong
Despite the criticism, Ethereum’s fundamentals remain solid. The network continues to boast over 1 million active validators and 35.6 million ETH staked, nearly 30% of the total supply.
Currently, the staking exit queue holds about 2.5 million ETH, though much of that stems from Kiln Finance following an exploit. Meanwhile, the entry queue recently hit a two-year high of 512,000 ETH, reflecting strong institutional accumulation.
The debate underscores a wider tension between Ethereum’s long-term security model and market expectations for liquidity. For Buterin, the message is clear: staking is about safeguarding the chain, not fast exits.
