The Scam That Follows the Scam: How to Identify Legitimate Crypto Recovery Companies
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

There is a category of fraud that only exists because another fraud already succeeded.

In its 2025 Internet Crime Report, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center logged more than 10,500 complaints about recovery scams – schemes in which fake law firms, fake government officials, and fake “asset recovery specialists” approach people who have already lost money to crypto fraud and promise to get it back. Reported losses from those schemes alone reached roughly $1.4 billion. In at least one documented scheme, the fraudsters impersonated IC3 employees.

The victims of recovery fraud are, by definition, people who have already been defrauded once. They are financially damaged, emotionally exhausted, and highly motivated to believe someone can undo the damage. That combination makes them the single most profitable target demographic in the entire fraud economy.

So the question is not whether you should get professional help after a crypto loss. Often you should. The question is how to distinguish the small number of legitimate crypto recovery companies from the much larger number of operations engineered to harvest you a second time.

First, understand what the honest answer sounds like

The most reliable filter is not credentials, or a slick website, or a case-study page. It is the first substantive thing a firm tells you about outcomes.

A legitimate blockchain forensics firm will tell you, early and unprompted, that tracing funds and recovering funds are two different things. Blockchain analysis can establish where stolen assets moved, which services received them, and which real-world entities control the receiving accounts. What it cannot do – what no private company can do – is compel an exchange in another jurisdiction to freeze and return an account balance. That authority sits with courts, regulators, and law enforcement.

Any firm that skips past this distinction is either incompetent or dishonest. Both should disqualify them.

The structural red flags

Recovery fraud has a consistent architecture. Once you know it, it is difficult to miss.

Unsolicited contact. Legitimate firms are found; they do not find you. If someone contacts you by Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram, or a comment reply on a forum where you posted about your loss, treat it as fraudulent by default. Victim lists circulate and are actively resold.

Guaranteed outcomes. No honest investigator can guarantee recovery, because recovery depends on jurisdiction, timing, the cooperating exchange’s compliance posture, and prosecutorial priorities – none of which the investigator controls.

Payment only in cryptocurrency. A firm that will only accept payment in the same asset class you were defrauded in has told you everything you need to know about its willingness to be traced.

Escalating fees. Recovery fraud rarely takes one payment. It takes a retainer, then a “transaction release fee,” then a “tax clearance,” then a “regulatory bond.” Each one is justified by proximity to success. There is no success.

Claims of privileged law enforcement access. No private firm has the ability to have funds released for you. Firms that genuinely work alongside agencies describe that relationship in specific, verifiable, procedural terms – referral packages, evidentiary standards, named units. Vague claims of “our FBI contacts” are marketing, not capability.

No verifiable corporate identity. A real firm has a registered legal entity, a physical address, identifiable named leadership with traceable professional histories, and a documented registration footprint. If the leadership page is stock photography and invented names, stop.

What a real engagement actually looks like

At Lionsgate Intelligence Network, a top blockchain forensics company who supported tens of thousands of victims worldwide since 2022, an intake begins with a critical document exercise during a video call with one of their experts: transaction hashes, receiving addresses, timestamps, platform correspondence, deposit records. Analysts then reconstruct the movement of funds across chains – following consolidation wallets, cross-chain bridges, mixers, and ultimately the off-ramp where value re-enters the regulated financial system.

Your path to recovery centers on a comprehensive, legal-grade evidentiary report. We provide an attributable fund-flow reconstruction designed to empower prosecutors, regulators, and litigators to take decisive action. With a track record of analyzing over 10,000 cases and tracing more than $1.5 billion in suspicious funds monthly, Lionsgate Intelligence Network rejects empty promises. Instead, we coordinate your evidence package directly into the relevant legal jurisdiction and facilitate your path to potential recovery by connecting you with specialized legal partners or guiding you through necessary formal processes. Whether your case results in asset seizure and restitution, or secures a documented, defensible loss position for legal and tax purposes, we provide clarity. We prioritize radical transparency: before you commit a single dollar, we evaluate your case to give you an honest, realistic assessment of what is achievable.

The free step you should take first

Before engaging anyone, file a complaint with the IC3 at ic3.gov, and file a report with your local police. Both are free. Both create the official record that any later legal or investigative action will need.

Include your transaction IDs, the receiving wallet addresses, and every communication channel the fraudsters used. If a firm discourages you from filing – or tells you that reporting will “jeopardise the recovery” – you are talking to the second scam.

The uncomfortable arithmetic

Americans reported $11.366 billion in cryptocurrency-related fraud losses in 2025, across 181,565 complaints – an average of $62,604 per victim. The recovery-fraud industry built on top of that number is now a billion-dollar business in its own right.

You cannot undo the first loss by moving quickly. You can absolutely prevent the second one by moving slowly. Verify the entity. Verify the people. Ask what happens if nothing is recoverable – and listen carefully to whether anyone is willing to say that out loud.

FAQ

Is paying for professional intelligence worth it after a crypto loss?

In most cases, yes – and the arithmetic is straightforward. Victims who act without a forensic trail typically lose far more than the cost of a legitimate investigation, because they have nothing to hand to law enforcement, no evidence for a civil litigator, and no documented basis for regulatory action. A professional blockchain forensics firm produces a fund-flow reconstruction with chain-of-custody integrity – the kind of record a prosecutor or regulator can actually use. The cost of intelligence is the cost of having options. Without it, you have none.

Why should you only work with forensic firms – not generic recovery agents?

Generic recovery agents have no investigative infrastructure. They cannot trace funds on-chain, produce evidentiary reports, or build jurisdictional referral packages. What they can do is take your money and disappear – which is precisely what the data shows they do. A forensic firm operates with the same methodology former federal investigators use: attributable fund flows, chain-of-custody documentation, and structured referrals to the appropriate legal authority. Lionsgate Intelligence Network, for example, coordinates its evidentiary packages into the relevant jurisdiction rather than making promises about wire transfers. That methodology is what creates the possibility of recovery. Promises do not.

Should the initial case review be free before you spend a single dollar?

Yes – and any firm worth engaging will offer exactly that. A competent forensic team can assess at intake whether your transaction hashes are traceable, whether the off-ramp is identifiable, and whether a viable jurisdictional pathway exists. That assessment requires expertise, not payment. A firm that demands fees before giving you any evaluation of your case’s viability is not investigating your situation. It is running the same playbook as the scam that brought you there. The initial case review should cost you nothing.

*Lionsgate Intelligence Network is a blockchain forensics and financial crime intelligence firm. As a leading forensic firm supporting victims of financial fraud, it does not guarantee asset recovery and does not accept engagements on that basis.*
