Ross Ulbricht, the controversial founder of the Silk Road darknet marketplace, has received a massive 300 BTC donation, worth approximately $31.4 million, just weeks after being released from prison. Blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence confirmed the transaction, identifying the donation from an unknown wallet.
This comes as part of a financial resurgence for Ulbricht, who has also earned $1.8 million from an ongoing auction of personal belongings via the Bitcoin-exclusive platform Scarce City.
Pardoned by Trump, Ulbricht Begins a New Chapter
After serving 12 years of a life sentence, Ross Ulbricht was granted a full and unconditional pardon by U.S. President Donald Trump on January 21. The news shocked many, as Ulbricht’s conviction for operating Silk Road included charges related to drug trafficking and money laundering.
Following his release, the Free Ross campaign reported receiving over $270,000 in Bitcoin donations within days to support his reintegration into society. The recent 300 BTC transfer dwarfs those earlier contributions.
Ulbricht subsequently moved most of the new funds on June 1, transferring $31.29 million to one address and a smaller $10,000.43 to another.
Silk Road Memorabilia Auction Nets $1.8 Million
Ulbricht is also in the spotlight for his auction on Scarce City, which runs until June 2. He is auctioning personal effects from before and during prison, including a sleeping bag, backpack, ID cards, and paintings.
In one touching item description, Ulbricht wrote:
“I don’t need the reminders, and I’m sure some of you will love to have them.”
Among the most notable sales:
-
A prison ID card sold for 5.5 BTC (over $580,000) after the original 11 BTC bid (~$1.1M) went unpaid.
-
A December 2023 oil painting titled Archway, co-created with fellow inmate Omega, fetched 1.01 BTC (~$106,000).
Ulbricht shared that Archway was inspired by a photo and symbolized hope:
“It gave me the feeling that, if I could pass through it, something better would be on the other side.”
Dormant BTC Wallets Could Hold Millions More
Crypto sleuths believe Ulbricht may still have access to millions of dollars in Bitcoin. During the original Silk Road bust in 2013, U.S. authorities seized over 100,000 BTC, but blockchain data shows not all wallets were emptied.
Coinbase director Conor Grogan recently identified 430 BTC (approx. $47 million) across wallets linked to Ulbricht, dormant for more than 13 years. This was independently confirmed by Arkham Intelligence, which linked 14 wallets to Silk Road, including one with $9 million in BTC.
Notably, two wallets linked to Silk Road activity reactivated last month, transferring 3,422 BTC worth $324.2 million.
As Ross Ulbricht begins his post-prison life, the crypto community watches closely, not only due to his past but because of the newfound financial power he now holds. Whether he plans to re-enter the crypto industry in a meaningful way remains to be seen.
