Polymarket, which enables users to bet on world events by buying and selling shares with cryptocurrency, has become a prominent name in the prediction market space. It gained significant attention during the 2024 U.S. presidential election, when overall trading volume exceeded $2.6 billion.
US Relaunch Gets the Green Light
Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan confirmed this week that the platform has received the “green light” to relaunch in the U.S. The announcement follows the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) no-action position on certain reporting and recordkeeping rules for event contracts, after a request from QCX.
This regulatory clarity clears the path for Polymarket’s re-entry into the American market, which has been on hold since January 2022. The company’s U.S. return will be supported by its acquisition of derivatives exchange QCEX, aimed at ensuring compliance and institutional trust.
Backing From Influential Supporters
The platform’s momentum has been bolstered by influential figures. Donald Trump Jr. invested in Polymarket and joined its advisory board last month, while Elon Musk’s X announced in June that it was “joining forces” with the platform, further raising its profile.
Market Growth vs. Trading Activity
While Polymarket set a record for new market creation, overall user activity has shown signs of slowing. Active traders dropped to around 227,000 in August, the lowest since October 2024. Moreover, trading volume has remained stagnant at approximately $1 billion for several months, well below the election-driven highs.
Despite this dip in activity, analysts suggest that Polymarket’s U.S. relaunch could reignite growth, especially with upcoming political and economic events likely to drive prediction demand.
