This reduces the onchain footprint while inheriting Bitcoin’s security guarantees. In practice, RGB’s client-side validation can deliver near-instant settlements, lower fees, and improved privacy, making it more efficient than legacy systems like Omni, which embed token data directly onchain.
Tether’s Strategy with RGB
Tether’s strategy with RGB is to enhance USDT transfers on Bitcoin by making them faster, cheaper,
and more private. This marks another step in the company’s broader plan to diversify networks supporting USDT.
Earlier this year, Tether began phasing out less scalable chains such as Omni, EOS, and Algorand,
shifting its focus toward high-demand ecosystems.
While most USDT circulation remains concentrated on Tron and Ethereum, the addition of RGB creates a
Bitcoin-native path for stablecoin payments and remittances. This move could strengthen integration with
Lightning-enabled wallets, exchanges, and merchant services, extending USDT’s utility across Bitcoin’s global network.
USDT Remains the Largest Stablecoin
Currently, USDT is the world’s largest stablecoin, with a circulating supply exceeding $167 billion,
according to The Block’s data dashboard.
Tether has also been deepening its role in Bitcoin’s ecosystem. As of Q2 2025, the company holds more
than 100,000 BTC and has invested over $2 billion in 15 mining facilities across Latin America. CEO Paolo Ardoino told The Block in June that the firm aims to become the largest Bitcoin miner by the end of 2025.
Global Expansion and European Presence
The expansion of USDT on Bitcoin also aligns with Tether’s push into regulated markets and new distribution channels.
Earlier this summer, Tether acquired a stake in Spanish exchange Bit2Me to strengthen its European presence.
This rollout represents a major step for Bitcoin’s stablecoin infrastructure, giving users a faster and
more private option for stablecoin transactions that plug into Lightning and expand Bitcoin’s real-world payment use cases.
