A recent hack involving approximately 1.2 million XRP (worth about $3.05 million) has laid bare the predatory practices of many crypto recovery firms, warns blockchain investigator ZachXBT. The victim, a 54-year-old retiree, discovered that his Ellipal wallet had been drained after importing his seed phrase into a mobile app—turning what he believed was cold storage into a hot wallet.

The Details

  • The incident began when the victim realized that his life savings, accumulated since 2017, were missing.

  • Analysis traced the stolen assets through over 120 cross-chain swaps, leaking into OTC desks tied to a U.S.-sanctioned network.

  • ZachXBT reports that more than 95 % of crypto recovery firms engage in exploitative operations—charging high fees for “recovery” that rarely yield results.

  • The case underscores confusion around “self-custody” solutions, as the victim believed he was securely storing funds, only to find the wallet had become vulnerable during the import process.

Why This Matters

This incident pulls back the curtain on a two-fold problem in the crypto world: first, sophisticated laundering of stolen funds through complex chains; second, a burgeoning recovery-services industry that may prey on victims rather than assist them. Experts warn that the financial damage from bad recovery firms may, in many cases, exceed the original hack.

What to Watch

Stakeholders recommend the following precautions:

  • Avoid importing seed phrases into mobile apps if you believe you’re using cold storage.

  • Be extremely cautious when approached by recovery-service firms claiming to guarantee full restitution.

  • Monitor large transfers and exchange inflows from unknown wallets as signs of active laundering.

  • Evaluate whether a purported recovery firm offers audited results or simply marketing promises.
